Business Mentors

The early stages of starting a business can be a daunting time. That's why South Devon Business Mentors has been established, to help you as you journey through the highs and lows of developing your own business. Operated by Torbay Innovation Centres, and funded by the Torbay Development Agency (TDA), the initiative offer support and advice to small and medium sized companies (SMEs) in the area.

The Mentors are experienced business people who have developed their own companies from scratch or have held senior management positions in industry. They have undergone an interview, induction programme and assessment to verify that they have the necessary credentials to be advising a client and receive a continuing programme of development in key business knowledge and diagnostic skills. They are dedicated to supporting local business people and helping them to achieve their personal and professional objectives.

Amongst other things, a Mentor can:

• Offer a fresh perspective on business issues
• Discuss developments and measure improvements
• Act as a ‘sounding board’ for your ideas at a stage when it may be too early to afford employees.
• Gain credibility with other business agencies/funders
• Review basic business principles like research, business plans, cash flow, P&L, sales forecasts and reality checks
• Help businesses to help themselves
